How to impress friends and family

Before we begin this article, let's define the two keywords Friend and Impress:

Definitions:

Friend -

1. A person whom one knows, likes, and trusts.
2. A person known well to another and regarded with liking, affection, and loyalty; an intimate.
3. A person whom one knows; an acquaintance.
4. A person with whom one is allied in a struggle or cause; a comrade.
5. One who supports, sympathizes with, or patronizes a group, cause, or movement.

Impress -

1. To affect strongly, often favorably.
2. To produce or attempt to produce a vivid impression or image.
3. To make an impression on; have a strong, lasting, or favourable effect on.

This article is simple, just like relationships are a two-way street, so are friendships and family. When building and maintaining friendships, it is always a good idea to make an effort. Remember whatever you put in, will be returned and if not, well...then you may consider is it worth it?

There is a long standing belief in society that you have to help yourself before you can help others, love yourself before you can love others. So do you need to impress others or impress yourself first? Trying to impress or please others will not help you, will not help your confidence, will not please or make you happy. You can never please everyone all the time and the moment you don't live up to their expectations, then you are still left feeling worthless, hopeless, empty and lonely. Happiness, confidence and independence comes from within, comes from completely surrounding yourself with everything and everyone that is positive and inspiring.

That is where the dance journey begins for you and now! There are so many different forms of dancing from solo dances to partner dances and group dances, and so many different styles including and not limited to Line Dancing, Jive, Rock 'n' Roll, Jazz, Lindy Hop, Charleston, Harlem, Swing, Ballroom, Latin, Ballet, Hip Hop and so forth. So, try them all and find the form and style that works best for you.

Why dance frequently?

  • Marian Chace, discovered back in the 1940s that her patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder were able to use dance therapy as a form of communication that assisted in the decrease of tension held in the body and minimized isolation;
  • According to the American Dance Therapy Association, is based on the core belief that there is a fundamental interconnection between mind and body and what happens to the body can effectively influence the mind and vice versa;
  • Researchers Leste and Rust (1990/1984) assigned patients with anxiety disorders to spend time in one of four settings: a modern-dance class, an exercise class, a music class, or a math class.  Only the dance class significantly reduced anxiety;
  • In a Korean study at Wonkwang University with adolescents engaging in dance/movement therapy for 12 weeks, results suggested that participation in dance/movement therapy may stabilize the sympathetic nervous system and improve psychological distress in adolescents with depression;
  • Dancing increases cognitive acuity (Sharpness and clarity in thinking, understanding, remembering and learning) in all ages;
  • Harvard Medical School psychiatrist Dr. Joseph Coyle explains in a commentary: "The cerebral cortex and hippocampus, which are critical to these activities, are remarkably plastic, and they rewire themselves based upon their use." Our brain constantly rewires its neural pathways, as needed. If it doesn't need to, then it won't.
  • Dance for self expression;
  • Evoke creativity;
  • You never have to be alone;
  • For fitness and keep in shape;
  • Because it can be the one thing you actually don't need a reason for;
  • For freedom;
  • For fun
  • and many more...

Do you have to take the dance journey on your own? No. Take a friend or more along with you, they will value the time spent with you to experience all the wonderful dance events and dance classes or lessons available. Family will just love being with you and happy to join you. Family are simply happy when you are happy! It is generally always easier and more comfortable to go to partner dance classes with someone but usually not necessary, always check with the individual dance schools.

Everyone dances for different reasons, the most important is to find it in you!

In particular, our dance school Let's Moove N Groove has Rock 'n' Roll and Lindy Hop dance classes. For those that have never danced before or never danced these styles then we have introductory lessons. By starting on a Week 1 you will be putting your best foot forward (Leaders Left and Followers Right)! Our school is coming to a close for the year and you can join the last 5 weeks for 2013 Week Commencing Monday, 11th November - Thursday, 14th November 2014. Visit our website for venues and locations.

Don't be afraid (fears only hold you back), stop procrastinating (finding all the excuses not to) just try dance on for YOU
